Abishag Cares for David

Now King David was old and well along in years,

David’s long reign had brought Israel unity, secured Jerusalem as its capital, and established a kingdom that would pass to one of his sons. His declining strength marks the beginning of a critical transition, as rival claims to the throne soon emerge.

and though they covered him with blankets,

Those attending David sought to provide warmth and comfort for the aging king. The detail emphasizes how greatly his condition had changed from the vigor that marked his earlier life.

Deu 24:12-13 If he is a poor man, you must not go to sleep…

he could not keep warm.

David’s frailty reveals that his final days were near and leaves the kingdom vulnerable to conflict over succession. The events that follow show the urgency of establishing Solomon as David’s rightful heir.

Ecc 4:11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm;…

So his servants said to him,

David’s attendants recognized that the king’s declining strength required special care. Their concern also reflected the importance of David’s health during a sensitive period for the kingdom, as questions of succession were already beginning to emerge.

2Sa 15:15 The king’s servants replied, “Whatever our lord the king…
1Sa 16:16 Let our lord command your servants here to seek out someone…

“Let us search for a young virgin

They proposed finding an unmarried young woman to serve in the royal household. Her youth and health were considered suitable for providing warmth and attentive care to an elderly king.

David remained the rightful king and was treated with the honor due to the Lord’s anointed ruler, though age and weakness had limited him.

to attend to him and care for him

Her assigned service included personal attendance, comfort, and practical care during David’s final days. The arrangement was made for his physical condition, not to establish a new marriage or produce an heir.

and lie by his side to keep him warm.”

In a time without modern heating, bodily warmth could be used to help someone unable to retain heat. David’s inability to stay warm revealed the seriousness of his frailty and foreshadowed the approaching transfer of power.

Ecc 4:11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm;…
2Ki 4:34 Then Elisha got on the bed and lay on the boy,…

Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful girl,

David’s servants conducted a nationwide search for a young woman suitable to care for the aged king and help keep him warm. Her beauty reflected the dignity expected within the royal household.

Est 2:2-4 Then the king’s attendants proposed, “Let a search be made…
Est 2:7 And Mordecai had brought up Hadassah (that is, Esther)…

and they found Abishag the Shunammite

Abishag came from Shunem in the territory of Issachar, near the Jezreel Valley. Though chosen for service in David’s final days, her place in the palace later became important in the struggle over the kingdom.

and brought her to the king.

Abishag entered David’s household as his attendant and caregiver. She served the king without becoming his wife, yet her association with him gave her a significant place in the events surrounding Solomon’s succession.

but he had no relations with her.

Abishag was not David’s wife or concubine. This fact later exposed Adonijah’s request to marry her as an attempt to claim royal authority associated with David’s household.

Adonijah Usurps the Kingdom

At that time Adonijah, David’s son by Haggith,

Adonijah was David’s fourth son. With Amnon and Absalom dead and Chileab absent from the succession narrative, he was David’s oldest surviving prominent son and may have considered himself the natural heir. His position within David’s large household also exposed the rivalries that often accompanied royal succession.

2Sa 3:4 his fourth was Adonijah, the son of Haggith;…
1Ch 3:2 the third was Absalom the son of Maacah…

began to exalt himself,

Rather than waiting for David’s decision or seeking God’s direction, Adonijah took steps to establish himself as king. His conduct resembled Absalom’s earlier effort to win public support and seize the throne.

Dan 5:20 But when his heart became arrogant and his spirit…
Pro 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit…

saying, “I will be king!”

Adonijah openly claimed the kingdom for himself, though David had determined that Solomon would succeed him. His ambition placed him in opposition to the king’s will and to God’s purpose for David’s house.

1Ki 2:15 “You know that the kingship was mine,” he said.…
2Sa 15:10 Then Absalom sent spies throughout the tribes of Israel…
2Sa 15:6 Absalom did this to all the Israelites who came to the king…

And he acquired chariots and horsemen and fifty men to run ahead of him.

Adonijah assembled an impressive royal escort to project authority and attract supporters. Chariots, horsemen, and runners before him created the appearance of an established king and echoed Absalom’s public display during his rebellion.

2Sa 15:1 Some time later, Absalom provided for himself…
1Sa 8:11 He said, “This will be the manner of the king…”…
Deu 17:16 But the king must not acquire many horses for himself…

(His father had never once reprimanded him by saying, “Why do you act this way?”

David had failed to restrain Adonijah or hold him accountable. This neglect helped foster the confidence and self-importance that later led Adonijah to claim the throne without David’s approval. David’s household had already suffered from the consequences of unchecked sin and unresolved rebellion, and Adonijah followed a similar course.

1Sa 3:13 I told him that I would judge his house forever…
Pro 29:15 A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child…
Pro 13:24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him…

Adonijah was also very handsome,

His appearance added to his public appeal and likely strengthened his ability to gather supporters. Yet his outward advantages did not establish his right to rule or show that he possessed the character required of Israel’s king.

2Sa 14:25 Now there was not a man in all Israel as handsome…

born next after Absalom.)

As the oldest surviving son after Absalom’s death, Adonijah may have considered himself David’s natural successor. But the kingdom did not pass merely by birth order. David had received God’s direction that Solomon would reign, making Adonijah’s attempt to take the throne an act of self-exaltation and defiance of God’s purpose.

2Sa 3:4-5 his fourth was Adonijah, the son of Haggith;…
1Ch 3:2 the third was Absalom the son of Maacah…

So Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah

Adonijah, David’s fourth son, moved to secure the throne while the aged king was weak. Joab, David’s nephew and longtime commander, had served David faithfully in war but also acted ruthlessly and independently. His support gave Adonijah military influence and revealed a serious division within the royal court.

and with Abiathar the priest,

Abiathar had served David for many years and remained loyal during Absalom’s rebellion. By joining Adonijah, he lent priestly standing to the attempted succession and helped present Adonijah’s claim as legitimate before the nation.

With Joab’s military authority and Abiathar’s religious position, Adonijah’s effort was more than a private ambition. Yet their support opposed David’s purpose for Solomon to succeed him, setting the stage for the conflict that followed.

Nathan and Bathsheba before David

Then Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon,

Nathan recognized that Adonijah’s attempt to claim the throne threatened the succession David had promised to Solomon. He turned to Bathsheba because she had direct access to David and a vital interest in protecting her son’s rightful inheritance. Their cooperation helped bring David’s earlier commitment to Solomon’s kingship into action.

1Ch 3:5 and these sons were born to him in Jerusalem:…

Adonijah had gathered influential supporters and publicly presented himself as king while David was still alive. Like Absalom before him, he sought the throne through personal ambition rather than by David’s appointment. His action created an immediate crisis within the royal household.

2Sa 15:10-12 Then Absalom sent spies throughout the tribes of Israel…
1Ki 2:15 “You know that the kingship was mine,” he said.…
1Ki 2:22-25 Why do you request Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah?…

and our lord David does not know it?

David’s advanced age and seclusion had left him unaware of developments in the kingdom. Nathan’s warning stressed the need for Bathsheba to inform him quickly, so that David could publicly confirm Solomon as his chosen successor.

2Sa 15:11-12 Two hundred men from Jerusalem accompanied Absalom.…
2Sa 15:13-14 Then a messenger came to David and reported,…
2Sa 17:15-16 So Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests…

Now please, come and let me advise you.

Nathan urgently approaches Bathsheba as Adonijah seeks to secure David’s throne without the king’s authorization. As David’s trusted prophet and counselor, Nathan understands that Solomon is the son appointed to succeed David and that Adonijah’s actions threaten God’s established purpose.

Pro 19:20 Listen to counsel and accept discipline…
Pro 15:22 Plans fail for lack of counsel.…
Pro 11:14 For lack of guidance, a nation falls,…

Save your own life and the life of your son Solomon.

If Adonijah became king, Bathsheba and Solomon would likely be treated as rivals to the throne and removed. Nathan’s counsel protects both their lives and preserves the succession God had designated through Solomon.

Deu 30:19-20 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today…
Gen 19:17 As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said,…
2Sa 14:11 “Please,” she replied, “may the king invoke the LORD”…

Go at once to King David and say,

Nathan directs Bathsheba to act without delay. David’s failing strength has created an opening for Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne, and the matter must be brought before the king while he can still give a clear command.

2Sa 14:12 Then the woman said, “Please, may your servant speak…
Est 4:8 Mordecai also gave Hathach a copy of the written decree…

‘My lord the king, did you not swear to your maidservant,

Bathsheba approaches David with humility while appealing to the commitment he had made concerning their son. His oath carries the weight of a royal and solemn promise.

Psa 132:11 The LORD swore an oath to David, a promise…
2Sa 7:12-13 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest…

“Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne”?

Solomon’s succession accords with David’s stated intention and with God’s purpose for David’s house. The throne represents the lawful continuation of David’s rule and the preservation of the kingdom under the son appointed to succeed him.

1Ch 28:5-7 And of all my sons—for the LORD has given me many sons—…
1Ki 2:12 So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David,…

Why then has Adonijah become king?’

Adonijah has acted independently, gathering supporters and presenting himself as king before David has transferred authority. Bathsheba’s question exposes the danger: unless David intervenes, Adonijah’s claim may displace Solomon and threaten those who support the rightful succession.

1Ki 2:15 “You know that the kingship was mine,” he said.…
2Sa 15:10 Then Absalom sent spies throughout the tribes of Israel…

Then, while you are still there speaking with the king,

Nathan instructs Bathsheba to appeal directly to David while the king is still able to act. David’s failing health has created a dangerous uncertainty over the succession, and Adonijah has already begun gathering support for his own claim to the throne. Bathsheba’s appeal would remind David of his promise that Solomon would reign after him.

2Sa 14:4-5 When the woman from Tekoa went to the king,…
1Ki 3:16-20 At that time two prostitutes came to the king…
Est 7:3-4 If I have found favor in your sight, O king,…

I will come in after you

Nathan would enter after Bathsheba to support her report and present the threat posed by Adonijah’s actions. As David’s prophet and trusted adviser, Nathan’s testimony carried weight in the royal court and helped ensure that the matter could not be dismissed as Bathsheba’s personal concern.

2Sa 14:33 So Joab went and told the king, and David summoned Absalom…
Est 8:3-6 And once again, Esther addressed the king.…
Est 5:1-2 On the third day, Esther put on her royal robes.…

and confirm your words.”

The agreement between Bathsheba and Nathan established the facts before David: Adonijah was advancing himself without the king’s approval, while Solomon was the son David had appointed to succeed him. Their coordinated action became the means by which David publicly confirmed Solomon as Israel’s next king.

Deu 19:15 A lone witness is not sufficient to establish any wrongdoing…
Mat 18:16 But if he will not listen, take one or two others along…
2Co 13:1 This is the third time I am coming to you…

So Bathsheba went to see the king in his bedroom.

Bathsheba entered David’s private chamber to bring an urgent matter before him. As Solomon’s mother, she had a direct interest in securing the succession David had promised. Her careful approach reflects the seriousness of addressing the aging king while Adonijah was acting to establish himself as ruler.

Since the king was very old,

David’s weakness had created uncertainty in the kingdom. Though still king, he was no longer actively directing events, allowing Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne to gain momentum. The need for David to publicly confirm his chosen successor had become immediate.

David received Bathsheba’s appeal and gave her opportunity to state her concern. Her request concerned Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne and David’s promise that Solomon would reign after him, a matter that would determine the rightful succession in Israel.

Est 7:2 and as they drank their wine on that second day,…
Est 5:3 “What is it, Queen Esther?” the king inquired.…

“My lord,” she replied,

Bathsheba approaches David with the deference due to Israel’s aging king while urgently placing the matter of succession before him. Her respectful appeal reminds him of his responsibility without challenging his authority.

2Sa 14:9 But the woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord the king,…

David’s throne represented the royal authority entrusted to his line. The immediate question was whether Solomon would succeed his father, preserving the dynasty through which God had promised an enduring kingdom.

Bathsheba urges David to act before Adonijah’s claim divides the nation. Solomon’s accession would fulfill God’s purpose for David’s dynasty and preserve the line through which the promised King would come.

Otherwise, when my lord the king rests with his fathers,

David’s death would remove the protection of his authority and leave the succession exposed to Adonijah’s claim. With David weakened and Adonijah gathering support, Bathsheba and Nathan had to act before he could establish himself as king.

1Ch 17:11 And when your days are fulfilled and you go…
1Ki 2:10 Then David rested with his fathers and was buried…

If Adonijah secured the throne, Bathsheba and Solomon would be treated as threats to his reign. Their support for Solomon’s appointment could be used against them, placing both their lives in danger. The succession had to be settled publicly before Adonijah’s ambition brought violence within David’s household.

“Nathan the prophet is here.”

Nathan had long served as God’s prophet and as a trusted counselor to David. His arrival signaled that the matter of the kingdom’s succession required immediate attention and that Adonijah’s actions threatened the promise concerning Solomon.

Nathan presses David to state whether Adonijah truly has royal authority. The question exposes the contrast between Adonijah’s self-exaltation and the king’s duty to establish the successor chosen according to God’s purpose.

Nathan identifies himself as David’s loyal servant and exposes Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne without the king’s knowledge or approval. His exclusion shows that Adonijah had deliberately avoided those committed to David’s chosen successor.

David Renews His Oath to Bathsheba

Then King David said,

David, aged and weakened, faced a growing succession crisis after Adonijah declared himself king without royal authorization. The decision before him would determine who would rule Israel and preserve the line God had appointed through David.

1Ch 29:1 Then King David said to the whole assembly,…
1Ch 17:16 Then King David went in, sat before the LORD…

“Call in Bathsheba for me.”

Bathsheba was Solomon’s mother and an essential witness to David’s earlier commitment that Solomon would succeed him. Her presence allowed David to address the matter directly and confirm his intention before those closest to the throne.

2Sa 11:4 Then David sent messengers to get her, and when she came…
2Sa 11:3 So David sent and inquired about the woman,…
2Sa 12:24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her…

So she came into the king’s presence

Bathsheba entered with the respect due the king, while the urgency of Adonijah’s actions gave the meeting immediate political importance. She came not only as David’s wife but as Solomon’s mother, seeking protection for her son and for David’s stated plan of succession.

Bathsheba bowed facedown in homage to the king

Bathsheba approached David with the honor due to Israel’s aging king. Her posture expressed respect for his authority while underscoring the urgency of her appeal concerning the succession.

Her greeting, “May my lord King David live forever,” was a traditional expression of loyalty and blessing, wishing the king enduring reign and prosperity, as she appealed to David to uphold his sworn promise that Solomon would reign after him. Though David’s life and reign were nearing their end, the words recognized his rightful authority to settle the matter.

Solomon Anointed King

Then King David said,

David acted with the full authority of Israel’s king to secure the succession God had appointed. Though weakened by age, he remained responsible for establishing order in the kingdom.

1Ch 28:2 It was in my heart to build a house as a resting place…
1Ch 29:1 Then King David said to the whole assembly,…

“Call in for me Zadok the priest,

Zadok represented the faithful priesthood and provided public religious support for Solomon’s appointment. His presence showed that the anointing would be carried out before God and in keeping with Israel’s covenant order.

1Ch 15:11 David summoned the priests Zadok and Abiathar…

Nathan the prophet,

2Sa 14:33 So Joab went and told the king, and David summoned Absalom…
1Ki 3:16 At that time two prostitutes came to the king…

“Take my servants with you,” said the king.

David ordered his trusted officials to accompany Solomon so that the succession would be carried out under royal authority and with credible witnesses. Their presence demonstrated that David himself had directed the action and that Solomon’s appointment was not an unauthorized move by Bathsheba or Nathan.

2Sa 11:1 In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war,…
2Sa 10:2 And David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash,…

For I have appointed him

David’s appointment of Solomon fulfilled God’s revealed purpose for the kingdom. Solomon was not merely the preferred son of an aging king but the one chosen to succeed him.

1Ch 29:1 Then King David said to the whole assembly,…
Deu 17:15 Appoint a king from among your brothers;…

Solomon was to rule the united tribes, including both the northern tribes of Israel and Judah in the south. His accession preserved the unity of the kingdom at a moment when Adonijah’s claim threatened division.

2Sa 5:5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months,…
Hos 1:11 Then the people of Judah and of Israel will be gathered…
Ezk 37:22 I will make them one nation in the land,…

“Amen,” replied Benaiah son of Jehoiada.

Benaiah, one of David’s mighty men and commander of the Cherethites and Pelethites, publicly affirms Solomon’s appointment, saying “Amen,” meaning “so be it” or “truly.” His support carries particular weight because he represents the military strength surrounding David’s throne and has remained loyal during Adonijah’s attempt to seize power.

1Ch 16:36 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,…
Neh 8:6 Then Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God…
Psa 106:48 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,…

“May the LORD, the God of my lord the king,

Benaiah recognizes that David’s God must establish the decision. Though David has ordered Solomon’s anointing, the transfer of the kingdom ultimately depends on the LORD’s purpose and blessing.

1Ki 10:9 Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you.…
2Ch 9:8 Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you…
1Ch 29:20 Then David said to the whole assembly, “Bless the LORD…

Benaiah asks God to confirm David’s choice and bring Solomon’s reign to pass. His response joins military loyalty with confidence that the LORD will preserve David’s dynasty through the son chosen to succeed him.

1Ki 8:26 And now, O God of Israel, please confirm what You promised…
2Sa 7:25 And now, O LORD God, confirm forever the word…
1Ch 17:23 And now, O LORD, let the word You have spoken…

Just as the LORD was with my lord the king,

David’s reign had been marked by God’s protection, guidance, and fulfillment of His covenant promises. His victories, the unification of Israel, and Jerusalem’s establishment as the nation’s center were not merely political achievements but evidence of the LORD’s favor.

2Sa 5:10 And David became greater and greater, for the LORD…
2Sa 7:9 I have been with you wherever you have gone,…
1Ch 17:8 I have been with you wherever you have gone,…

so may He be with Solomon

Solomon’s accession depended on God’s appointment and blessing. As David’s chosen successor, he would need the same divine presence to secure the kingdom, govern the people, and carry out the work God had assigned him.

1Ch 22:11 Now, my son, may the LORD be with you…
1Ch 28:20 David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong…
2Ch 1:1 Now Solomon son of David established himself…

and make his throne even greater than that of my lord King David.”

David laid the foundation for Israel’s kingdom, while Solomon would preside over its period of greatest peace, wealth, and international influence. His chief task would be the building of the temple in Jerusalem. Solomon’s greater throne also anticipates the lasting reign of David’s greater Son, Jesus Christ, whose kingdom will never end.

Then Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada,

These trusted servants of David united priestly authority, prophetic confirmation, and military leadership in carrying out the king’s command. Their presence demonstrated that Solomon’s accession was not a private scheme but the authorized succession established under David’s rule.

1Ch 17:1 After David had settled into his palace, he said to Nathan…
2Sa 23:20 And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of valor…

along with the Cherethites and Pelethites,

David’s elite guard accompanied them, providing security and publicly supporting Solomon against Adonijah’s rival claim. Their involvement ensured that the procession and anointing proceeded under the protection of the royal household.

2Sa 15:18 and all his servants marched past him—…
2Sa 20:7 So Joab’s men, along with the Cherethites, the Pelethites,…

Gihon, a major spring near Jerusalem, provided a well-known location where the anointing could be witnessed and quickly reported throughout the city. The public procession helped establish Solomon’s claim before Adonijah could secure broader support.

from the tabernacle

Taking the oil from the sacred tent emphasized that Solomon’s kingship was established under God’s authority.

Music accompanied the procession as the people celebrated Solomon’s anointing. Such public rejoicing marked the occasion as a national affirmation of the new king.

The celebration reflected relief, hope, and confidence that David’s throne would continue through Solomon. The people received him not merely as a royal son but as the king appointed to rule after David.

that the earth was split by the sound.

The immense noise of the crowd and instruments conveyed the scale of the celebration throughout Jerusalem. Solomon’s accession was received with overwhelming joy, sharply contrasting Adonijah’s private attempt to seize the throne.

Adonijah Learns of Solomon’s Kingship

Now Adonijah and all his guests were finishing their feast

Adonijah had proclaimed himself king without David’s authorization and gathered prominent supporters to strengthen his claim. The feast marked his attempted coronation, but it was held apart from the public anointing of Solomon in Jerusalem.

when they heard the sound of the ram’s horn.

The horn announced Solomon’s anointing and the people’s acceptance of him as king. David had ordered Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet to establish Solomon openly, confirming the succession God had promised through David.

Lev 25:9-10 Then you are to sound the horn far and wide on the tenth day…
Num 10:1-10 Then the LORD said to Moses,…

“Why is the city in such a loud uproar?” asked Joab.

Joab, David’s commander and Adonijah’s supporter, recognized that the celebration in the city threatened Adonijah’s plans. The public rejoicing revealed that Solomon, not Adonijah, had been installed as king.

1Sa 4:13-14 When he arrived, there was Eli, sitting on his chair…
Act 21:31-34 While they were trying to kill him, the commander…
2Ch 23:12-13 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running…

As he was speaking,

Adonijah’s feast and attempted seizure of the throne were still underway when the report arrived.

Luk 9:34 While Peter was speaking, a cloud appeared…
Gen 24:15 Before the servant had finished praying, Rebekah came out…

suddenly Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest arrived.

Jonathan came from the circle supporting Adonijah, since his father Abiathar had joined the conspiracy. His arrival brought news from Jerusalem at the decisive moment.

2Sa 18:25-27 So he called out and told the king. “If he is alone,”…
1Sa 4:12 That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line…
2Sa 1:2-4 On the third day a man with torn clothes and dust…

“Come in,” said Adonijah,

Adonijah received him confidently, expecting confirmation that his plans had succeeded.

Jdg 4:18 Jael went out to greet Sisera and said to him, “Come in, my lord.…
Gen 19:2 and said, “My lords, please turn aside…”…

“for you are a man of valor.

Jonathan was regarded as a reliable messenger, but Adonijah’s expectation proved mistaken. The news would reveal that David had acted swiftly to establish Solomon as king.

Jdg 6:12 And the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon and said,…
Jdg 11:1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor;…
1Ch 12:28 Zadok, a mighty young man of valor, with 22 commanders…

You must be bringing good news.”

Adonijah's assumption that Jonathan brings good news reveals his expectations and desires. The anticipation of good news reflects Adonijah's hope for confirmation of his kingship. This expectation is ironic, as the narrative soon reveals that Jonathan's news is not favorable to Adonijah.

2Ki 7:9 Finally, they said, “We are not doing what is right.…
Isa 52:7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those…
Rom 10:15 And how can they preach unless they are sent?…

“Not at all,” Jonathan replied.

Jonathan’s report immediately overturns Adonijah’s confidence that his self-proclaimed kingship had succeeded. As Abiathar’s son, he arrives from the events at Gihon with authoritative news of David’s decision.

1Sa 20:2 “Far from it!” Jonathan replied. “You will not die.…
Gen 42:10 “Not so, my lord,” they replied. “Your servants have come…

“Our lord King David

Though aged and weakened, David remains Israel’s rightful king and retains the authority to appoint his successor. Jonathan’s words affirm David’s legitimacy in contrast to Adonijah’s unauthorized attempt to seize the throne.

2Sa 24:21 “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?”…

David has publicly established Solomon as king in accordance with God’s purpose for the Davidic line. The announcement exposes the failure of Adonijah’s conspiracy and confirms the transfer of royal authority to Solomon.

2Sa 20:7 So Joab’s men, along with the Cherethites, the Pelethites,…

The royal mule publicly identifies Solomon as David’s appointed heir and marks the transfer of royal authority.

Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet

Zadok and Nathan acted under David’s command to install Solomon as king. Zadok represented the priestly order descended from Aaron, while Nathan spoke as the prophet through whom God had confirmed Solomon’s succession. Their joint participation publicly established that Solomon’s rule rested on both David’s authority and God’s appointment.

At the Gihon spring near Jerusalem, Solomon was anointed with sacred oil and formally set apart as king. The location allowed the event to be witnessed openly, while the anointing marked Solomon as the Lord’s chosen ruler over Israel.

and they have gone up from there with rejoicing

The procession returned from Gihon with public celebration as the people recognized Solomon’s accession. Their joy contrasted sharply with Adonijah’s private gathering and showed where the nation’s support had turned.

2Sa 6:12-15 Now it was reported to King David, “The LORD has blessed…
1Ch 15:28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD…
1Sa 11:15 So all the people went to Gilgal and confirmed Saul…

that rings out in the city.

Jerusalem heard the celebration because Solomon’s coronation was no secret or minor event. The city’s response confirmed that the royal succession had been settled in David’s house.

Neh 12:43 On that day they offered great sacrifices,…
Ezr 3:13 The people could not distinguish the shouts of joy…
Est 8:15 Mordecai went out from the presence of the king…

That is the noise you hear.

Jonathan’s report informed Adonijah’s company that the commotion they heard was the celebration of Solomon’s anointing. Adonijah’s attempt to claim the throne had failed because the rightful king had already been publicly established.

2Ki 11:13 When Athaliah heard the noise from the guards…
2Ch 23:13 And she looked and saw the king standing by his pillar…
1Sa 4:13-14 When he arrived, there was Eli, sitting on his chair…

Moreover, Solomon

David’s son by Bathsheba, whose name means “peaceful,” had been chosen by God to succeed his father. Though Adonijah had attempted to claim the kingdom, Solomon’s anointing and public support established him as the rightful king.

1Ch 29:1 Then King David said to the whole assembly,…
1Ch 28:5 And of all my sons—for the LORD has given me many sons—…
1Ch 22:6 Then David called for his son Solomon and instructed him…

has taken his seat

Solomon’s accession was now complete. He had been anointed by Zadok, recognized by the people, and installed with the authority of David’s house.

1Ki 2:12 So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David,…
1Ch 29:23 So Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king…
2Ch 1:1 Now Solomon son of David established himself…

on the royal throne.

Solomon’s reign continued the dynasty God promised to David. His enthronement secured the immediate succession and began a period marked by national stability, the building of the temple, and Israel’s greatest prosperity.

1Ki 2:45 But King Solomon will be blessed, and David’s throne……
2Sa 7:13 He will build a house for My Name, and I will…
1Ch 17:14 But I will set him over My house and My kingdom forever…

The king’s servants have also gone to congratulate our lord King David,

David’s officials publicly acknowledged Solomon as the rightful successor. Their loyalty helped confirm the orderly transfer of authority during David’s final days.

1Ch 29:22-24 That day they ate and drank with great joy…
1Ch 12:38-40 All these men of war, arrayed for battle,…
2Sa 5:1-3 Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron…

saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than your own name,

The blessing recognized that Solomon’s future greatness depended on God’s favor. Though David’s name was already honored throughout Israel, his servants hoped Solomon would surpass him through wisdom, peace, and lasting achievement.

1Ch 29:25 The LORD highly exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel…
1Ki 4:29-31 And God gave Solomon wisdom, exceedingly deep insight…
2Ch 1:12 Therefore wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you.…

and may He make his throne greater than your throne.’

Solomon would inherit a united and secure kingdom, later enlarging its wealth, influence, and worship through the building of the temple. His reign also continued God’s promise to establish David’s royal line.

1Ch 29:23 So Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king…
2Ch 9:22-23 So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth…
1Ki 3:13 Moreover, I will give you what you did not request…

And the king has bowed in worship on his bed,

Though weak and confined to his bed, David responded with worship. He recognized that Solomon’s accession was not merely a political victory over Adonijah’s claim but the fulfillment of God’s purpose for Israel.

Gen 47:31 “Swear to me,” Jacob said. So Joseph swore to him…
Heb 11:21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed…
1Ch 29:20 Then David said to the whole assembly, “Bless the LORD…

saying, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel!

David praised the covenant God of Israel for directing the succession of the kingdom according to His promise.

Psa 41:13 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel…
Luk 1:68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,…
1Ch 29:10 Then David blessed the LORD in the sight of all…

Today He has provided one to sit on my throne,

Solomon’s accession was not merely a political arrangement but God’s established provision for the Davidic dynasty. David recognized that the kingdom would continue through the son chosen to succeed him.

Psa 132:11 The LORD swore an oath to David, a promise…
1Ch 28:5 And of all my sons—for the LORD has given me many sons—…
1Ch 29:23 So Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king…

and my eyes have seen it.’”

Near the end of his life, David personally witnessed Solomon publicly confirmed as king, seeing God’s promise concerning his house carried forward.

Luk 2:30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation,
Psa 118:23 This is from the LORD, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
Job 42:5 My ears had heard of You, but now my eyes have seen You.

At this,

“At this” refers to the news that Solomon had been anointed king, which abruptly ended Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne.

Dan 5:6 his face grew pale and his thoughts so alarmed him…

all the guests of Adonijah

The phrase refers to all who had joined Adonijah’s feast in support of his claim to the throne, including men who expected his rule to prevail.

2Sa 13:28-29 Watch Amnon until his heart is merry with wine…
Dan 5:1-4 Later, King Belshazzar held a great feast…

arose in terror

Because Solomon had been publicly established as David’s chosen successor, Adonijah’s supporters arose in terror, fearing judgment for their involvement in his attempted usurpation.

Jdg 7:21-22 Each Israelite took his position around the camp…

Ezk 34:5-6 They were scattered for lack of a shepherd,…

But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon,

Adonijah had attempted to seize the throne without David’s approval. After David publicly appointed and anointed Solomon as king, Adonijah recognized that his rival now possessed legitimate royal authority and that his own actions could bring judgment.

got up and went

Realizing the danger was immediate, Adonijah acted quickly to seek protection rather than resist Solomon.

Jon 1:3 Jonah, however, got up to flee to Tarshish…
Gen 22:3 So Abraham got up early the next morning,…

to take hold of the horns of the altar.

He fled to the sanctuary and grasped the altar’s horns as an appeal for mercy. The altar represented the Lord’s holy presence, and Adonijah’s action acknowledged Solomon’s authority and his own dependence on clemency.

1Ki 2:28 When the news reached Joab, who had conspired with Adonijah…
Exo 21:14 But if a man schemes and acts willfully against his neighbor…

It was reported to Solomon:

News of Adonijah’s actions quickly reached the new king, whose authority was now being established in Jerusalem.

2Sa 12:1-7 Then the LORD sent Nathan to David, and when he arrived,…
2Sa 15:13-14 Then a messenger came to David and reported,…

“Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon,

Having attempted to seize the throne before David’s death, Adonijah knew that Solomon could regard him as a threat and punish him for his rebellion.

saying, ‘Let King Solomon first swear to me not to put his servant to the sword.’”

Calling himself Solomon’s servant, Adonijah submitted to Solomon’s rule and asked for assurance that his life would be spared.

Jos 2:12-14 Now therefore, please swear to me by the LORD…
Jos 9:15 And Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live…
1Sa 24:21-22 So now, swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off…

And Solomon replied,

Solomon answered Adonijah after his half-brother sought refuge at the altar, fearing judgment for his attempt to claim the throne during David’s final days. As the newly established king, Solomon showed both restraint and authority.

1Ki 3:28 When all Israel heard of the judgment the king had given,…

Pro 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold…

“If he is a man of character,

Adonijah’s future depended on whether he would submit loyally to Solomon and abandon any further claim to the kingdom. Mercy was extended, but it was not permission to continue in rebellion.

Pro 10:9 He who walks in integrity walks securely,…

not a single hair of his will fall to the ground.

Solomon promised Adonijah complete safety and protection if he proved faithful. He would not be punished merely for his earlier actions if his conduct afterward demonstrated submission and integrity.

Luk 21:18 Yet not even a hair of your head will perish.
Act 27:34 So for your own preservation, I urge you to eat…

But if evil is found in him,

Any renewed conspiracy, disloyalty, or attempt to challenge Solomon’s God-appointed rule would reveal that Adonijah remained a threat to the kingdom.

2Sa 14:32 “Look,” said Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask:…
Deu 17:2-5 If a man or woman among you in one of the towns…
Deu 19:19-21 you must do to him as he intended to do…

he will die.”

Solomon made clear that rebellion would bring judgment. Adonijah was released under this condition, placing responsibility for his future conduct upon him.

So King Solomon summoned Adonijah down from the altar,

Adonijah had sought protection at the altar after his attempt to seize the throne collapsed. Solomon did not order his execution but allowed him to leave the place of refuge, showing that the new king would not act rashly or punish without cause.

Exo 21:14 But if a man schemes and acts willfully against his neighbor…

Solomon spared Adonijah and sent him away under an implied warning to live peaceably. The mercy shown was not approval of Adonijah’s rebellion, but an opportunity for him to prove his loyalty.
