1  שְׁמַ֣ע (Hear), יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (O Israel)! אַתָּ֨ה (You) עֹבֵ֤ר (are passing over) הַיּוֹם֙ (today) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן (the Jordan) לָבֹא֙ (to go in) לָרֶ֣שֶׁת (to dispossess) גּוֹיִ֔ם (nations) גְּדֹלִ֥ים (greater) וַעֲצֻמִ֖ים (and mightier) מִמֶּ֑ךָּ (than yourself), עָרִ֛ים (cities) גְּדֹלֹ֥ת (great) וּבְצֻרֹ֖ת (and fortified) בַּשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (to the heavens), 2  עַֽם־ (a people) גָּד֥וֹל (great) וָרָ֖ם (and tall), בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) עֲנָקִ֑ים (of the Anakim), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) אַתָּ֤ה (you) יָדַ֙עְתָּ֙ (know). וְאַתָּ֣ה (And you) שָׁמַ֔עְתָּ (have heard): מִ֣י (Who) יִתְיַצֵּ֔ב (can stand) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the faces) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) עֲנָֽק׃ (of Anak)? 3  וְיָדַעְתָּ֣ (And you shall know) הַיּ֗וֹם (today) כִּי֩ (that) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ (your God) הֽוּא־ (is He) הָעֹבֵ֤ר (who is passing over) לְפָנֶ֙יךָ֙ (before you) אֵ֣שׁ (as a fire) אֹֽכְלָ֔ה (consuming); ה֧וּא (He) יַשְׁמִידֵ֛ם (will destroy them), וְה֥וּא (and He) יַכְנִיעֵ֖ם (bring them down) לְפָנֶ֑יךָ (before you); וְהֽוֹרַשְׁתָּ֤ם (and you shall drive them out) וְהַֽאַבַדְתָּם֙ (and destroy them) מַהֵ֔ר (quickly), כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (has spoken) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לָֽךְ׃ (to you).

4  אַל־ (Not) תֹּאמַ֣ר (do speak) בִּלְבָבְךָ֗ (in your heart), בַּהֲדֹ֣ף (after has cast out) יְהוָה֩ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ (your God) אֹתָ֥ם׀ (them) מִלְּפָנֶיךָ֮ (before you), לֵאמֹר֒ (saying), בְּצִדְקָתִי֙ (Because of my righteousness) הֱבִיאַ֣נִי (has brought me in) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) לָרֶ֖שֶׁת (to possess) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּ֑את (this). וּבְרִשְׁעַת֙ (For the wickedness) הַגּוֹיִ֣ם (of the nations) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) מוֹרִישָׁ֥ם (is driving them out) מִפָּנֶֽיךָ׃ (from before you).

5  לֹ֣א (Not) בְצִדְקָתְךָ֗ (in your righteousness) וּבְיֹ֙שֶׁר֙ (or the uprightness) לְבָ֣בְךָ֔ (of your heart) אַתָּ֥ה (are you) בָ֖א (going in) לָרֶ֣שֶׁת (to possess) אֶת־ (-) אַרְצָ֑ם (their land), כִּ֞י (but) בְּרִשְׁעַ֣ת׀ (for the wickedness) הַגּוֹיִ֣ם (of the nations) הָאֵ֗לֶּה (these) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God) מוֹרִישָׁ֣ם (is driving them out) מִפָּנֶ֔יךָ (from before you), וּלְמַ֜עַן (so that) הָקִ֣ים (He may fulfill) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֗ר (the word) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) נִשְׁבַּ֤ע (swore) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לַאֲבֹתֶ֔יךָ (to your fathers), לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם (to Abraham), לְיִצְחָ֖ק (to Isaac), וּֽלְיַעֲקֹֽב׃ (and to Jacob). 6  וְיָדַעְתָּ֗ (And you shall know) כִּ֠י (that) לֹ֤א (not) בְצִדְקָֽתְךָ֙ (in your righteousness) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱ֠לֹהֶיךָ (your God) נֹתֵ֨ן (is giving) לְךָ֜ (you) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֧רֶץ (the land) הַטּוֹבָ֛ה (good) הַזֹּ֖את (this) לְרִשְׁתָּ֑הּ (to possess it) כִּ֥י (for) עַם־ (a people). קְשֵׁה־ (Stiff) עֹ֖רֶף (of neck) אָֽתָּה׃ (you are).

The Golden Calf
(Exodus 32:1–35; Acts 7:39–43)

7  זְכֹר֙ (Remember)— אַל־ (not) תִּשְׁכַּ֔ח (do forget)— אֵ֧ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (how) הִקְצַ֛פְתָּ (you provoked to wrath) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness). לְמִן־ (From) הַיּ֞וֹם (the day) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יָצָ֣אתָ׀ (you departed) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרַ֗יִם (of Egypt) עַד־ (until) בֹּֽאֲכֶם֙ (you⁺ came) עַד־ (to) הַמָּק֣וֹם (the place) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), מַמְרִ֥ים (rebellious) הֱיִיתֶ֖ם (you⁺ have been) עִם־ (against) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

8  וּבְחֹרֵ֥ב (And in Horeb) הִקְצַפְתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ provoked to wrath) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וַיִּתְאַנַּ֧ף (and was angry) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) בָּכֶ֖ם (with you⁺) לְהַשְׁמִ֥יד (to destroy) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺). 9  בַּעֲלֹתִ֣י (In my going up) הָהָ֗רָה (into the mountain) לָקַ֜חַת (to receive) לוּחֹ֤ת (the tablets) הָֽאֲבָנִים֙ (of stone), לוּחֹ֣ת (the tablets) הַבְּרִ֔ית (of the covenant) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) כָּרַ֥ת (made) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) עִמָּכֶ֑ם (with you⁺), וָאֵשֵׁ֣ב (then I stayed) בָּהָ֗ר (on the mountain) אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (forty) יוֹם֙ (days) וְאַרְבָּעִ֣ים (and forty) לַ֔יְלָה (nights). לֶ֚חֶם (Bread) לֹ֣א (not) אָכַ֔לְתִּי (I did eat), וּמַ֖יִם (and water) לֹ֥א (not) שָׁתִֽיתִי׃ (I did drink).

10  וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (And delivered) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֗י (to me) אֶת־ (-) שְׁנֵי֙ (two) לוּחֹ֣ת (tablets) הָֽאֲבָנִ֔ים (of stone), כְּתֻבִ֖ים (written) בְּאֶצְבַּ֣ע (with the finger) אֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God), וַעֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (and on them) כְּֽכָל־ (were all) הַדְּבָרִ֡ים (the words) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) דִּבֶּר֩ (had spoken) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) עִמָּכֶ֥ם (to you⁺) בָּהָ֛ר (on the mountain) מִתּ֥וֹךְ (out of the midst) הָאֵ֖שׁ (of the fire) בְּי֥וֹם (in the day) הַקָּהָֽל׃ (of the assembly). 11  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) מִקֵּץ֙ (at the end) אַרְבָּעִ֣ים (of forty) י֔וֹם (days) וְאַרְבָּעִ֖ים (and forty) לָ֑יְלָה (nights), נָתַ֨ן (has given) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֗י (to me) אֶת־ (-) שְׁנֵ֛י (two) לֻחֹ֥ת (tablets) הָאֲבָנִ֖ים (of stone), לֻח֥וֹת (tablets) הַבְּרִֽית׃ (of the covenant). 12  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֗י (to me), ק֣וּם (Arise), רֵ֤ד (go down) מַהֵר֙ (quickly) מִזֶּ֔ה (from here); כִּ֚י (for) שִׁחֵ֣ת (have acted corruptly) עַמְּךָ֔ (your people) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) הוֹצֵ֖אתָ (you brought) מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם (out of Egypt). סָ֣רוּ (They have turned aside) מַהֵ֗ר (quickly) מִן־ (from) הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ (the way) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) צִוִּיתִ֔ם (I commanded them)! עָשׂ֥וּ (They have made) לָהֶ֖ם (for themselves) מַסֵּכָֽה׃ (a molten image).

13  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֣י (to me), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), רָאִ֙יתִי֙ (I have seen) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֣ם (the people) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), וְהִנֵּ֥ה (and indeed) עַם־ (a people) קְשֵׁה־ (stiff) עֹ֖רֶף (of neck) הֽוּא׃ (it is). 14  הֶ֤רֶף (Desist) מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ (from Me), וְאַשְׁמִידֵ֔ם (that I may destroy them) וְאֶמְחֶ֣ה (and blot out) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמָ֔ם (their name) מִתַּ֖חַת (from under) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (the heavens). וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה֙ (And I will make) אֽוֹתְךָ֔ (of you) לְגוֹי־ (a nation) עָצ֥וּם (mightier) וָרָ֖ב (and greater) מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ (than they).

15  וָאֵ֗פֶן (And I turned) וָֽאֵרֵד֙ (and came down) מִן־ (from) הָהָ֔ר (the mountain), וְהָהָ֖ר (and the mountain) בֹּעֵ֣ר (burned) בָּאֵ֑שׁ (with the fire), וּשְׁנֵי֙ (and two) לֻחֹ֣ת (the tablets) הַבְּרִ֔ית (of the covenant were) עַ֖ל (in) שְׁתֵּ֥י (two) יָדָֽי׃ (my hands). 16  וָאֵ֗רֶא (And I looked), וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and behold), חֲטָאתֶם֙ (you⁺ had sinned) לַיהוָ֣ה (against YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God); עֲשִׂיתֶ֣ם (you⁺ had made) לָכֶ֔ם (for yourselves) עֵ֖גֶל (a calf) מַסֵּכָ֑ה (molten). סַרְתֶּ֣ם (You⁺ had turned aside) מַהֵ֔ר (quickly) מִן־ (from) הַדֶּ֕רֶךְ (the way) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) צִוָּ֥ה (had commanded) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺). 17  וָאֶתְפֹּשׂ֙ (And I took) בִּשְׁנֵ֣י (two) הַלֻּחֹ֔ת (the tablets) וָֽאַשְׁלִכֵ֔ם (and threw them) מֵעַ֖ל (out) שְׁתֵּ֣י (of two) יָדָ֑י (my hands), וָאֲשַׁבְּרֵ֖ם (and I broke them) לְעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃ (before your⁺ eyes).

18  וָֽאֶתְנַפַּל֩ (And I fell down) לִפְנֵ֨י (before the face of) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH), כָּרִאשֹׁנָ֗ה (as at the first), אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (forty) יוֹם֙ (days) וְאַרְבָּעִ֣ים (and forty) לַ֔יְלָה (nights); לֶ֚חֶם (bread) לֹ֣א (not) אָכַ֔לְתִּי (I did eat) וּמַ֖יִם (and water) לֹ֣א (not) שָׁתִ֑יתִי (I did drink), עַ֤ל (because) כָּל־ (of all) חַטַּאתְכֶם֙ (your⁺ sin) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) חֲטָאתֶ֔ם (you⁺ committed) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (in doing) הָרַ֛ע (the evil) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), לְהַכְעִיסֽוֹ׃ (to provoke Him to anger). 19  כִּ֣י (For) יָגֹ֗רְתִּי (I was afraid) מִפְּנֵ֤י (of) הָאַף֙ (the anger) וְהַ֣חֵמָ֔ה (and the fury), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (with which) קָצַ֧ף (was angry) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) עֲלֵיכֶ֖ם (with you⁺) לְהַשְׁמִ֣יד (to destroy) אֶתְכֶ֑ם (you⁺). וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע (And listened) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֵלַ֔י (to me) גַּ֖ם (also) בַּפַּ֥עַם (at the time) הַהִֽוא׃ (that).

20  וּֽבְאַהֲרֹ֗ן (And against Aaron) הִתְאַנַּ֧ף (was angry) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) מְאֹ֖ד (very) לְהַשְׁמִיד֑וֹ (and would have destroyed him). וָֽאֶתְפַּלֵּ֛ל (And I prayed) גַּם־ (also) בְּעַ֥ד (for) אַהֲרֹ֖ן (Aaron) בָּעֵ֥ת (at the time) הַהִֽוא (that). 21  וְֽאֶת־ (And) חַטַּאתְכֶ֞ם (your⁺ sin) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עֲשִׂיתֶ֣ם (you⁺ had made)— אֶת־ (-) הָעֵ֗גֶל (the calf)— לָקַחְתִּי֮ (I took) וָאֶשְׂרֹ֣ף (and burned) אֹת֣וֹ׀ (it) בָּאֵשׁ֒ (with the fire), וָאֶכֹּ֨ת (and crushed) אֹת֤וֹ (it) טָחוֹן֙ (and ground it) הֵיטֵ֔ב (well), עַ֥ד (until) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) דַּ֖ק (it was as fine) לְעָפָ֑ר (as dust); וָֽאַשְׁלִךְ֙ (and I threw) אֶת־ (-) עֲפָר֔וֹ (its dust) אֶל־ (into) הַנַּ֖חַל (the brook) הַיֹּרֵ֥ד (that descended) מִן־ (from) הָהָֽר׃ (the mountain).

22  וּבְתַבְעֵרָה֙ (And at Taberah) וּבְמַסָּ֔ה (and Massah) וּבְקִבְרֹ֖ת (and at Kibroth-) הַֽתַּאֲוָ֑ה (hattaavah) מַקְצִפִ֥ים (provoked to wrath) הֱיִיתֶ֖ם (you⁺) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 23  וּבִשְׁלֹ֨חַ (And likewise when sent) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶתְכֶ֗ם (you⁺) מִקָּדֵ֤שׁ (from Kadesh-) בַּרְנֵ֙עַ֙ (barnea) לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), עֲלוּ֙ (Go up) וּרְשׁ֣וּ (and possess) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָתַ֖תִּי (I have given) לָכֶ֑ם (to you⁺),

וַתַּמְר֗וּ (and you⁺ rebelled against) אֶת־ (-) פִּ֤י (the commandment) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֱלֹ֣הֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God), וְלֹ֤א (and not) הֶֽאֱמַנְתֶּם֙ (you⁺ did believe) ל֔וֹ (Him) וְלֹ֥א (and not) שְׁמַעְתֶּ֖ם (obey) בְּקֹלֽוֹ׃ (His voice). 24  מַמְרִ֥ים (Rebellious) הֱיִיתֶ֖ם (You⁺ have been) עִם־ (against) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH) מִיּ֖וֹם (from the day) דַּעְתִּ֥י (that I knew) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺). 25  וָֽאֶתְנַפַּ֞ל (And I prostrated myself) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) אֵ֣ת (-) אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (forty) הַיּ֛וֹם (days) וְאֶת־ (and) אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (forty) הַלַּ֖יְלָה (nights), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (when) הִתְנַפָּ֑לְתִּי (I kept prostrating myself) כִּֽי־ (because) אָמַ֥ר (had said) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לְהַשְׁמִ֥יד (He would destroy) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺).

26  וָאֶתְפַּלֵּ֣ל (And I prayed) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָה֮ (YHWH) וָאֹמַר֒ (and said), אֲדֹנָ֣י (O Lord) יְהוִ֗ה (YHWH) אַל־ (not) תַּשְׁחֵ֤ת (do destroy) עַמְּךָ֙ (Your people) וְנַחֲלָ֣תְךָ֔ (and Your inheritance), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) פָּדִ֖יתָ (You have redeemed) בְּגָדְלֶ֑ךָ (through Your greatness), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) הוֹצֵ֥אתָ (You have brought) מִמִּצְרַ֖יִם (out of Egypt) בְּיָ֥ד (with a hand) חֲזָקָֽה׃ (mighty). 27  זְכֹר֙ (Be mindful) לַעֲבָדֶ֔יךָ (of Your servants), לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם (of Abraham), לְיִצְחָ֖ק (of Isaac), וּֽלְיַעֲקֹ֑ב (and of Jacob); אַל־ (not) תֵּ֗פֶן (turn) אֶל־ (to) קְשִׁי֙ (the stubbornness) הָעָ֣ם (of the people) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), וְאֶל־ (and to) רִשְׁע֖וֹ (their wickedness), וְאֶל־ (and to) חַטָּאתֽוֹ׃ (their sin), 28  פֶּן־ (lest) יֹאמְר֗וּ (should say) הָאָרֶץ֮ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (from which) הוֹצֵאתָ֣נוּ (You brought us) מִשָּׁם֒ (there), מִבְּלִי֙ (Because not) יְכֹ֣לֶת (was able) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) לַהֲבִיאָ֕ם (to bring them) אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) דִּבֶּ֣ר (He promised) לָהֶ֑ם (them), וּמִשִּׂנְאָת֣וֹ (and because He hated) אוֹתָ֔ם (them), הוֹצִיאָ֖ם (He has brought them out) לַהֲמִתָ֥ם (to kill them) בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (in the wilderness). 29  וְהֵ֥ם (And they are) עַמְּךָ֖ (Your people) וְנַחֲלָתֶ֑ךָ (and Your inheritance), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (whom) הוֹצֵ֙אתָ֙ (You brought out) בְּכֹחֲךָ֣ (by Your power) הַגָּדֹ֔ל (mighty) וּבִֽזְרֹעֲךָ֖ (and by Your arm) הַנְּטוּיָֽה׃פ (outstretched).
