The Demons and the Pigs
(Matthew 8:28–34; Luke 8:26–39)

1  Καὶ (And) ἦλθον (they came) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) πέραν (other side) τῆς (of the) θαλάσσης (sea) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) χώραν (region) τῶν (of the) Γερασηνῶν (Gerasenes). 2  καὶ (And) ἐξελθόντος (having gone out) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) πλοίου (boat), εὐθὺς (immediately) ὑπήντησεν (met) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) μνημείων (tombs) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἐν (with) πνεύματι (a spirit) ἀκαθάρτῳ (unclean), 3  ὃς (who) τὴν (the) κατοίκησιν (dwelling) εἶχεν (had) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μνήμασιν (tombs), καὶ (And) οὐδὲ (not even) ἁλύσει (with a chain) οὐκέτι (no longer) οὐδεὶς (anyone) ἐδύνατο (was able) αὐτὸν (him) δῆσαι (to bind) 4  διὰ (because) τὸ (-) αὐτὸν (he) πολλάκις (often) πέδαις (with shackles) καὶ (and) ἁλύσεσιν (chains) δεδέσθαι (had been bound), καὶ (and) διεσπάσθαι (had been torn in two) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) τὰς (the) ἁλύσεις (chains) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) πέδας (shackles) συντετρῖφθαι (had been shattered), καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἴσχυεν (had strength) αὐτὸν (him) δαμάσαι (to subdue)· 5  καὶ (And) διὰ (constantly) παντὸς (all) νυκτὸς (night) καὶ (and) ἡμέρας (day) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μνήμασιν (tombs) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ὄρεσιν (mountains) ἦν (he was) κράζων (crying out) καὶ (and) κατακόπτων (cutting) ἑαυτὸν (himself) λίθοις (with stones).

6  Καὶ (And) ἰδὼν (having seen) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar) ἔδραμεν (he ran) καὶ (and) προσεκύνησεν (fell on his knees) αὐτόν (before Him), 7  καὶ (And) κράξας (having cried out) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud) λέγει (he says)· Τί (What) ἐμοὶ (to me) καὶ (and) σοί (to You), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Υἱὲ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τοῦ (the) Ὑψίστου (Most High)? ὁρκίζω (I adjure) σε (You) τὸν (-) Θεόν (by God), μή (not) με (me) βασανίσῃς (torment). 8  ἔλεγεν (He was saying) γὰρ (for) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ἔξελθε (Come out) τὸ (-) πνεῦμα (spirit) τὸ (-) ἀκάθαρτον (unclean) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man).

9  Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτα (He was asking) αὐτόν (him)· Τί (What is) ὄνομά (the name) σοι (to you)?

Καὶ (And) λέγει (he says) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Λεγιὼν (Legion is) ὄνομά (the name) μοι (to me), ὅτι (because) πολλοί (many) ἐσμεν (we are). 10  καὶ (And) παρεκάλει (he implored) αὐτὸν (Him) πολλὰ (much) ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) αὐτὰ (them) ἀποστείλῃ (He might send) ἔξω (out of) τῆς (the) χώρας (region).

11  Ἦν (was) δὲ (now) ἐκεῖ (there) πρὸς (near) τῷ (the) ὄρει (mountain) ἀγέλη (a herd) χοίρων (of pigs) μεγάλη (great) βοσκομένη (feeding)· 12  καὶ (And) παρεκάλεσαν (they implored) αὐτὸν (Him) λέγοντες (saying)· Πέμψον (Send) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰς (into) τοὺς (the) χοίρους (pigs), ἵνα (so that) εἰς (into) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰσέλθωμεν (we may enter).

13  Καὶ (And) ἐπέτρεψεν (He allowed) αὐτοῖς (them). καὶ (And) ἐξελθόντα (having gone out) τὰ (the) πνεύματα (spirits) τὰ (-) ἀκάθαρτα (unclean) εἰσῆλθον (entered) εἰς (into) τοὺς (the) χοίρους (pigs), καὶ (and) ὥρμησεν (rushed) (the) ἀγέλη (herd) κατὰ (down) τοῦ (the) κρημνοῦ (steep bank) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea), ὡς (about) δισχίλιοι (two thousand), καὶ (and) ἐπνίγοντο (they were drowned) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θαλάσσῃ (sea).

14  Καὶ (And) οἱ (those) βόσκοντες (feeding) αὐτοὺς (them) ἔφυγον (fled) καὶ (and) ἀπήγγειλαν (reported it) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city) καὶ (and) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) ἀγρούς (fields)· καὶ (And) ἦλθον (they went) ἰδεῖν (to see) τί (what) ἐστιν (it is) τὸ (that) γεγονός (has happened). 15  καὶ (And) ἔρχονται (they come) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) θεωροῦσιν (they see) τὸν (the man) δαιμονιζόμενον (possessed by demons) καθήμενον (sitting) ἱματισμένον (clothed) καὶ (and) σωφρονοῦντα (sound-minded), τὸν (the one) ἐσχηκότα (having had) τὸν (the) λεγιῶνα (legion), καὶ (and) ἐφοβήθησαν (they were afraid).

16  καὶ (And) διηγήσαντο (related) αὐτοῖς (to them) οἱ (those) ἰδόντες (having seen it) πῶς (how) ἐγένετο (it happened) τῷ (to the one) δαιμονιζομένῳ (possessed by demons) καὶ (and) περὶ (about) τῶν (the) χοίρων (pigs). 17  καὶ (And) ἤρξαντο (they began) παρακαλεῖν (to implore) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπελθεῖν (to go away) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ὁρίων (borders) αὐτῶν (of them).

18  Καὶ (And) ἐμβαίνοντος (on having entered) αὐτοῦ (He) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πλοῖον (boat) παρεκάλει (was imploring) αὐτὸν (Him) (the one) δαιμονισθεὶς (having been possessed by demons) ἵνα (that) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) (he might be). 19  καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἀφῆκεν (He permitted) αὐτόν (him), ἀλλὰ (but) λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ὕπαγε (Go) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκόν (house) σου (of you) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (-) σούς (your⁺ own), καὶ (and) ἀπάγγειλον (report) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὅσα (how much) (the) Κύριός (Lord) σοι (for you) πεποίηκεν (has done) καὶ (and) ἠλέησέν (He had mercy on) σε (you).

20  Καὶ (And) ἀπῆλθεν (he went away) καὶ (and) ἤρξατο (began) κηρύσσειν (to proclaim) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) Δεκαπόλει (Decapolis) ὅσα (how much) ἐποίησεν (did) αὐτῷ (for him) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) ἐθαύμαζον (were marveling).

21  Καὶ (And) διαπεράσαντος (on having crossed over) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πλοίῳ (boat) πάλιν (again) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) πέραν (other side) συνήχθη (was gathered) ὄχλος (a crowd) πολὺς (great) ἐπ’ (to) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (and) ἦν (He was) παρὰ (beside) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea). 22  καὶ (And) ἔρχεται (comes) εἷς (one) τῶν (of the) ἀρχισυναγώγων (synagogue rulers), ὀνόματι (named) Ἰάϊρος (Jairus), καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) αὐτὸν (Him) πίπτει (he falls) πρὸς (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him), 23  καὶ (and) παρακαλεῖ (he implores) αὐτὸν (Him) πολλὰ (much) λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-) Τὸ (The) θυγάτριόν (little daughter) μου (of me) ἐσχάτως (at the end) ἔχει (is holding), ἵνα (so that) ἐλθὼν (having come) ἐπιθῇς (You might lay) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) αὐτῇ (on her), ἵνα (so that) σωθῇ (she might be saved) καὶ (and) ζήσῃ (she might live).

24  Καὶ (And) ἀπῆλθεν (He went away) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him). καὶ (And) ἠκολούθει (was following) αὐτῷ (Him) ὄχλος (a crowd) πολύς (great), καὶ (and) συνέθλιβον (pressing in on) αὐτόν (Him). 25  Καὶ (And) γυνὴ (a woman) οὖσα (being) ἐν (with) ῥύσει (a flow) αἵματος (of blood) δώδεκα (twelve) ἔτη (years), 26  καὶ (and) πολλὰ (much) παθοῦσα (having suffered) ὑπὸ (under) πολλῶν (many) ἰατρῶν (physicians) καὶ (and) δαπανήσασα (having spent) τὰ (the) παρ’ (of) αὐτῆς (hers) πάντα (all), καὶ (and) μηδὲν (in no way) ὠφεληθεῖσα (having benefited) ἀλλὰ (but) μᾶλλον (rather) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) χεῖρον (worse) ἐλθοῦσα (having come), 27  ἀκούσασα (having heard) τὰ (-) περὶ (about) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἐλθοῦσα (having come) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὄχλῳ (crowd) ὄπισθεν (behind) ἥψατο (she touched) τοῦ (the) ἱματίου (garment) αὐτοῦ (of Him)· 28  ἔλεγεν (She was saying) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (-) Ἐὰν (If) ἅψωμαι (I shall touch) κἂν (even) τῶν (the) ἱματίων (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him) σωθήσομαι (I will be saved). 29  καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἐξηράνθη (was dried up) (the) πηγὴ (flow) τοῦ (of the) αἵματος (blood) αὐτῆς (of her), καὶ (and) ἔγνω (she knew) τῷ (in the) σώματι (body) ὅτι (that) ἴαται (she was healed) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) μάστιγος (affliction).

30  Καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐπιγνοὺς (having known) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself) τὴν (the) ἐξ (of) αὐτοῦ (Him) δύναμιν (power) ἐξελθοῦσαν (having gone out), ἐπιστραφεὶς (having turned) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὄχλῳ (crowd) ἔλεγεν (said)· Τίς (Who) μου (of Me) ἥψατο (touched) τῶν (the) ἱματίων (garments)?

31  Καὶ (And) ἔλεγον (were saying) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him)· Βλέπεις (You see) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd) συνθλίβοντά (pressing in on) σε (You), καὶ (and) λέγεις (You say)· Τίς (Who) μου (Me) ἥψατο (touched)?

32  Καὶ (And) περιεβλέπετο (He was looking around) ἰδεῖν (to see) τὴν (the one) τοῦτο (this) ποιήσασαν (having done). 33  (-) δὲ (And) γυνὴ (the woman) φοβηθεῖσα (having been afraid) καὶ (and) τρέμουσα (trembling), εἰδυῖα (knowing) (what) γέγονεν (had happened) αὐτῇ (to her), ἦλθεν (came) καὶ (and) προσέπεσεν (fell down before) αὐτῷ (Him) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (told) αὐτῷ (Him) πᾶσαν (whole) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth).

34  (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῇ (to her)· Θυγάτηρ (Daughter), (the) πίστις (faith) σου (of you) σέσωκέν (has saved) σε (you)· ὕπαγε (go) εἰς (in) εἰρήνην (peace), καὶ (and) ἴσθι (be) ὑγιὴς (sound) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) μάστιγός (affliction) σου (of you).

35  Ἔτι (In still) αὐτοῦ (His) λαλοῦντος (speaking) ἔρχονται (they come) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ἀρχισυναγώγου (synagogue ruler) λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-) (The) θυγάτηρ (daughter) σου (of You) ἀπέθανεν (died)· τί (why) ἔτι (still) σκύλλεις (do you trouble) τὸν (the) διδάσκαλον (Teacher)?

36  (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) παρακούσας (having heard) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) λαλούμενον (spoken) λέγει (says) τῷ (to the) ἀρχισυναγώγῳ (synagogue ruler)· Μὴ (Not) φοβοῦ (fear), μόνον (only) πίστευε (believe). 37  καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἀφῆκεν (He allowed) οὐδένα (no one) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) συνακολουθῆσαι (to follow) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸν (-) Πέτρον (Peter) καὶ (and) Ἰάκωβον (James) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννην (John) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) Ἰακώβου (of James).

38  Καὶ (And) ἔρχονται (they come) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχισυναγώγου (synagogue ruler), καὶ (and) θεωρεῖ (He sees) θόρυβον (a commotion), καὶ (and) κλαίοντας (weeping) καὶ (and) ἀλαλάζοντας (wailing) πολλά (much), 39  καὶ (And) εἰσελθὼν (having entered) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Τί (Why) θορυβεῖσθε (do you⁺ make a commotion) καὶ (and) κλαίετε (weep)? τὸ (The) παιδίον (child) οὐκ (not) ἀπέθανεν (died) ἀλλὰ (but) καθεύδει (sleeps). 40  καὶ (And) κατεγέλων (they were laughing at) αὐτοῦ (Him).

Αὐτὸς (He) δὲ (then) ἐκβαλὼν (having put out) πάντας (all) παραλαμβάνει (takes along) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) τοῦ (of the) παιδίου (child) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) εἰσπορεύεται (He enters in) ὅπου (where) ἦν (was) τὸ (the) παιδίον (child). 41  καὶ (And) κρατήσας (having taken) τῆς (the) χειρὸς (hand) τοῦ (of the) παιδίου (child) λέγει (He says) αὐτῇ (to her)· Ταλιθὰ (Talitha) κούμ (koum), (Which) ἐστιν (is) μεθερμηνευόμενον (translated) Τὸ (-)· Κοράσιον (Little girl), σοὶ (to you) λέγω (I say), ἔγειρε (arise). 42  καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἀνέστη (arose) τὸ (the) κοράσιον (girl) καὶ (and) περιεπάτει (began walking)· ἦν (she was) γὰρ (for) ἐτῶν (of years) δώδεκα (twelve). καὶ (And) ἐξέστησαν (they were amazed) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἐκστάσει (with amazement) μεγάλῃ (great). 43  καὶ (And) διεστείλατο (He instructed) αὐτοῖς (them) πολλὰ (much) ἵνα (that) μηδεὶς (no one) γνοῖ (should know) τοῦτο (this), καὶ (and) εἶπεν (He said) δοθῆναι (to be given) αὐτῇ (to her) φαγεῖν (to eat).
