The principal divisions eventually came under Cassander in Macedonia and Greece, Lysimachus in Thrace and Asia Minor, Seleucus in Syria and the East, and Ptolemy in Egypt. After Seleucus III’s brief reign, Antiochus III renewed the Seleucid struggle against Egypt for control of Coele-Syria and the surrounding lands. After attacking Jerusalem, Antiochus returned to Seleucid territory, leaving behind conflict that would soon intensify. 2Ch 32:21 and the LORD sent an angel who annihilated every mighty man…… At the appointed time God’s sovereign schedule governed the unfolding conflict. Gen 18:14 Is anything too difficult for the LORD?… he will invade the South again, Antiochus IV Epiphanes would again march against Egypt, continuing the struggle between the Seleucid kingdom in the north and the Ptolemaic kingdom in the south. Jer 43:10-11 Then tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts,… but this time will not be like the first. Unlike his earlier successful campaigns, this invasion would end differently as Roman intervention forced Antiochus to withdraw from Egypt. Ezk 5:9 Because of all your abominations, I will do to you… Ships of Kittim will come against him, Roman power intervenes in Antiochus IV’s Egyptian campaign. At Eleusis near Alexandria, the Roman envoy Gaius Popillius Laenas demanded that Antiochus withdraw from Egypt. Unable to resist Rome, Antiochus was forced to abandon his plans. He supported Jews who embraced Hellenistic practices and rejected covenant faithfulness, using them to strengthen his control over Jerusalem and undermine those who remained loyal to God. Pro 2:16-17 It will rescue you from the forbidden woman… His forces will rise up Antiochus IV Epiphanes sent Seleucid troops against Jerusalem to secure control of Judea and enforce his religious decrees. The temple in Jerusalem was plundered and defiled as pagan worship was introduced into its courts. Antiochus dedicated the sanctuary to Zeus and treated its holy furnishings and altar with contempt. Dan 9:27 And he will confirm a covenant with many…… and set up the abomination of desolation. A pagan altar was erected in the temple area, and unclean sacrifices were offered upon it. The desecration left the sanctuary abandoned for its appointed purpose and became the historical pattern for the final abomination still anticipated in prophecy. Dan 12:11 And from the time the daily sacrifice is abolished… With flattery he will corrupt those who violate the covenant, Antiochus IV Epiphanes gained support among Jews already willing to abandon the Mosaic Covenant and adopt Hellenistic customs. Through political favor, promises, and deception, he strengthened the apostate party that welcomed his suppression of Jewish worship and law. Pro 26:28 A lying tongue hates those it crushes… but the people who know their God Those faithful to the Lord refused to surrender their covenant identity. Their knowledge of God was shown in loyalty to His commands, worship, and promises despite pressure to conform. 1Ch 28:9 As for you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father… will firmly resist him. Faithful Jews, including those associated with the Maccabean revolt, opposed Antiochus’s attempts to eradicate biblical worship. Their resistance involved both refusing idolatry and defending the right to obey God’s law. 1Pe 5:9 Resist him, standing firm in your faith… Those with insight will instruct many, Faithful Jews who understood God’s covenant and recognized the evil of Antiochus IV’s policies would strengthen and teach others to remain loyal to the Lord. Their wisdom was shown not merely in knowledge but in steadfast obedience during a national crisis. Dan 12:3 Then the wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens,… though for a time they will fall by sword or flame, Many would suffer violent death during the persecution that preceded the Maccabean revolt. Refusing idolatry and submission to pagan practices brought execution, including death by weapons and burning. Heb 11:34-37 quenched the raging fire, and escaped the edge of the sword… or be captured or plundered. Others would be imprisoned, enslaved, or stripped of their possessions. Their suffering would be severe but limited, occurring within God’s appointed period of oppression. Luk 21:12-13 But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you.… Now when they fall, The faithful Jews would suffer persecution under Antiochus IV Epiphanes, including death, imprisonment, and loss of property. Their suffering became a severe test of loyalty to the covenant and resistance to forced Hellenization. Psa 37:24 Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed… they will be granted a little help, God raised up deliverance through the Maccabean revolt. Though small in comparison with the power of the Seleucid kingdom, Judas Maccabeus and his followers won key victories and restored temple worship. 2Ch 12:7-8 When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves,… but many will join them insincerely. As the resistance gained strength, some attached themselves to the cause for safety, advantage, or public appearance rather than genuine devotion to God. Their presence brought outward numbers without necessarily bringing faithfulness. Gal 2:4 This issue arose because some false brothers had come in… Some of the wise will fall Faithful Jews with spiritual understanding would suffer under Antiochus IV Epiphanes, including imprisonment, torture, and death for refusing to abandon the covenant and adopt pagan practices. Mat 24:10-13 At that time many will fall away and will betray… so that they may be refined, purified, and made spotless Their persecution would distinguish genuine faith from compromise and prepare a faithful remnant to endure. Dan 12:10 Many will be purified, made spotless, and refined… until the time of the end, The oppression would not continue indefinitely but would last only within the limits set by God. The King Who Exalts HimselfThe ruler acts without restraint, pursuing his own will and exercising authority with open contempt for God’s law and His people. His conduct reflects the tyranny seen in Antiochus IV Epiphanes, while also anticipating the final world ruler described elsewhere in prophecy. Dan 8:4 I saw the ram charging toward the west and the north… and will exalt and magnify himself above every god, He elevates himself above every object of worship and demands ultimate loyalty. Antiochus promoted his own divine status and profaned the temple, but the final fulfillment points to a ruler who openly claims authority that belongs to God alone. 2Th 2:4 He will oppose and exalt himself above every-so-called god… and he will speak monstrous things against the God of gods. His rebellion is expressed in deliberate blasphemy against the true God. Antiochus attacked Jewish worship and desecrated the temple, foreshadowing a greater defiance that will culminate in open opposition to God. Rev 13:5-6 The beast was given a mouth to speak arrogant and… He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, His power is real but temporary. God permits his rise and apparent success only for the appointed period of judgment; his authority does not extend beyond the limits God has set. The king’s rebellion, his brief success, and his eventual downfall will unfold according to God’s settled purpose. His rule will be marked by conquest, fortified strongholds, and dependence on armed force. Antiochus IV’s policies and ambitions displayed this kind of departure as he advanced Greek worship and imposed his authority over conquered peoples. He will lavish wealth on this god and on the military system connected with it, using riches to strengthen his rule and secure allegiance. His confidence will rest in power and possessions rather than in the God of Israel. Rev 18:12-17 cargo of gold, silver, precious stones, and pearls;… He will attack the strongest fortresses The final king will overcome defenses thought to be secure, extending his power through military force and strategic alliances. His victories will demonstrate the unprecedented authority granted to him for a limited time. 2Ch 32:1 After all these acts of faithfulness, Sennacherib… with the help of a foreign god His success will be tied to devotion to a false power, replacing the worship of the true God with a system that exalts strength, conquest, and self. This false worship will sustain his rebellion and deceive those who follow him. Psa 81:9 There must be no strange god among you,… and will greatly honor those who acknowledge him, Loyalty to his rule and religion will bring public favor, influence, and material reward. Those who refuse him will face exclusion and persecution. Est 6:11 So Haman took the robe and the horse, arrayed Mordecai,… making them rulers over many He will establish his authority through appointed officials who enforce his policies across the territories under his control. Jer 46:2 concerning Egypt and the army of Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt… but the king of the North will storm out against him The king of the North will respond with a swift and overwhelming counterattack against his opponent. Jer 1:14-15 Then the LORD said to me, “Disaster from the north… with chariots, horsemen, and many ships, He will deploy powerful land and naval forces, including chariots, horsemen, and many ships. Exo 14:7-9 He took 600 of the best chariots, and all the other chariots… invading many countries and sweeping through them like a flood. His campaign will rapidly overrun nations, demonstrating the scale of his military power and the turmoil preceding God’s final intervention. Isa 8:7-8 the Lord will surely bring against them the floodwaters… He will also invade the Beautiful Land, Israel, the land God gave to Abraham’s descendants, will lie in the path of the king’s campaign. Its central location between Egypt, Syria, and Mesopotamia has repeatedly made it a battleground for surrounding powers. Dan 8:9 From one of these horns a little horn emerged… and many countries will fall. The invasion will extend beyond Israel as the ruler subdues neighboring lands and establishes wider control. Dan 7:23 This is what he said: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom… But these will be delivered from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the leaders of the Ammonites. These territories east and southeast of Israel, largely within modern Jordan, will escape his conquest. Their exemption marks a limit set on the ruler’s power even during his rapid advance. Egypt, long recognized as a major regional power because of its wealth, location, and military importance, will also fall under his domination. No established nation will be strong enough to remain outside his reach. Isa 19:1 This is the burden against Egypt: Behold, the LORD rides… He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver Egypt’s renowned wealth would fall into the hands of the invading ruler, demonstrating not merely a military victory but control over the nation’s economic strength. 2Ki 14:14 He took all the gold and silver and all the articles… and over all the riches of Egypt, His dominion would extend to Egypt’s full resources, including its agricultural production, trade, and accumulated royal wealth. Ezk 29:19-20 I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar… and the Libyans and Cushites will also submit to him. The surrounding peoples of Libya and Cush would come under his authority as well, showing that his campaign would establish influence beyond Egypt’s borders. 2Ch 16:8 Were not the Cushites and Libyans a vast army… But news from the east and the north will alarm him, Reports of opposition from these directions will disrupt the king of the North at the height of his power. Facing threats beyond his immediate campaigns, he will turn from expansion to violent retaliation. 2Ki 19:7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him so that he will hear… and he will go out with great fury His response will be marked by rage and urgency as he seeks to crush those who challenge his authority. Rev 19:15 And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword… to destroy many The campaign will bring widespread death, showing the ruthless character of his rule and his determination to remove all resistance. His purpose will be not merely to defeat his enemies but to annihilate them, carrying out a judgment-like destruction against those in his path. Deu 20:17 For you must devote them to complete destruction… He will pitch his royal tents The king of the North will establish his military headquarters in the land of Israel, displaying his authority and preparing for final conflict.
