Berean Study Bible Forty-Eight Cities for the LevitesThe Levites were set apart for the service of the Tabernacle and its worship. They received no tribal territory but were assigned cities among the other tribes, enabling them to carry out their duties throughout Israel. Their clan leaders came forward on behalf of the tribe in an orderly appeal concerning the inheritance God had appointed for them. 1Ch 15:12 And he said to them, “You are the heads of the Levitical… approached Eleazar the priest, Eleazar, Aaron’s son and successor as high priest, oversaw Israel’s priestly service after Aaron’s death. Num 36:1 Now the family heads of the clan of Gilead… Joshua son of Nun, Joshua led Israel in the conquest and was directing the distribution of the land. As Moses’ appointed successor, he was responsible for ensuring that each tribe received its allotted inheritance according to the Lord’s instruction. Num 27:18-23 And the LORD replied to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun,… and the heads of the other tribes of Israel The tribal leaders represented the people whose territories would include Levitical cities. Their involvement ensured that the assignment was recognized by all Israel and carried out fairly among the tribes. Jos 14:1 Now these are the portions that the Israelites inherited… at Shiloh in the land of Canaan Shiloh, in Ephraim’s hill country, served as Israel’s central place of worship after the conquest, where the Tabernacle was established. Its central location made it a fitting gathering place for national matters. Jos 18:1 Then the whole congregation of Israel assembled at Shiloh.… and said to them, The Levites addressed Israel’s leaders concerning the provision assigned to them under God’s law. Jos 23:2 he summoned all Israel, including its elders… “The LORD commanded through Moses Their request rested on God’s command, not on a new claim. Moses had instructed Israel to provide for the Levites, who received no tribal territory of their own. Jos 14:2 Their inheritance was assigned by lot for the nine tribes… that we be given cities in which to live, The Levites were to dwell in cities distributed among the tribes, allowing them to carry out their service and instruction throughout the land. Num 35:2-3 Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance… together with pasturelands for our livestock.” The surrounding pasturelands supplied room for their animals and supported their households, providing for the practical needs of those set apart for the Lord’s service. Num 35:4-5 The pasturelands around the cities you are… So by the command of the LORD, Israel acted under God’s direct instruction, fulfilling the provisions He had established for the Levites. Num 35:1-2 Again the LORD spoke to Moses on the plains of Moab… the Israelites gave the Levites Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no large tribal territory because their service centered on the tabernacle and the worship of God. Num 35:7-8 The total number of cities you give the Levites… these cities and their pasturelands The assigned towns provided places for Levite families to live, while the surrounding lands supported their animals and daily needs. Num 35:2-5 Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance… out of their own inheritance: Each tribe surrendered part of its allotted land, distributing the Levites throughout Israel so they could carry out their priestly and teaching responsibilities among the people. Jos 13:14 To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance… The first lot came out for the Kohathite clans. Kohath was Levi’s second son, and his descendants formed one of the three major Levitical divisions. They were assigned duties connected with the sanctuary, including the care of its most holy furnishings. Like all Levites, they received cities within the tribal territories rather than a separate tribal inheritance. The lot determined their allotment according to God’s appointed order. Num 3:27-32 From Kohath came the clans of the Amramites… The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin. Aaron’s descendants belonged to the Kohathite clan but were set apart for the priesthood. Their cities placed them among Israel’s leading tribes and provided homes for the priests who served at the sanctuary, taught God’s law, and ministered on behalf of the people. 1Ch 6:54-60 Now these were the territories assigned to the Aaronites… The remaining descendants of Kohath The Kohathites were one of the three major Levite clans, descended from Kohath, son of Levi. They served in connection with the holiest furnishings of the tabernacle. Other Kohathite families had already received cities from Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin. 1Ch 6:66 And some of the clans of the Kohathites were given… received ten cities by lot The cities were assigned by lot under Israel’s established process for distributing the land and its provisions. The ten cities supplied homes and pasturelands for these Levites and their households. 1Ch 6:61 To the rest of the Kohathites, ten cities were… from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. These tribes occupied much of central Israel west of the Jordan. By placing Kohathite families among them, the Levites were distributed throughout the land to assist the people in matters of worship and instruction in God’s law. Jos 16:5-10 This was the territory of the descendants of Ephraim… The descendants of Gershon The Gershonites, descended from Levi through Gershon, were one of the three Levitical divisions. Their assigned service centered on the tabernacle curtains, coverings, screens, and cords. Num 3:18 These were the names of the sons of Gershon… received thirteen cities by lot Their cities were assigned according to the Lord’s established distribution for the Levites, who received towns among the other tribes rather than a separate tribal territory. 1Ch 6:62-63 The Gershomites, according to their clans,… from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, These northern tribes provided cities that placed Gershonite families throughout the land, where they could carry out their sacred responsibilities among Israel. Jos 19:17-23 The fourth lot came out for the clans… and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan. Some Gershonite cities lay east of the Jordan in Bashan, the territory occupied by the eastern half of Manasseh after Israel’s conquest of Og’s kingdom. Jos 13:29-31 This is what Moses had given to the clans… And the descendants of Merari The descendants of Merari formed the third major Levitical division, alongside the Gershonites and Kohathites. They received twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun. Num 3:33-37 From Merari came the clans of the Mahlites and Mushites;… received twelve cities They received twelve cities for their households and livestock. These towns enabled the Levites to live among the tribes and serve the nation in worship and instruction. 1Ch 6:63-64 The Merarites were allotted twelve cities… from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun. Reuben and Gad lay east of the Jordan, while Zebulun was in the northern part of Canaan. Four cities came from each tribe, extending the Merarites’ presence across both sides of the Jordan and confirming Israel’s shared responsibility to support those appointed for the Lord’s service. 1Ch 6:78-81 From the tribe of Reuben east of the Jordan opposite Jericho… So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these cities, Israel carried out the command to provide the Levites with towns among the tribal territories. Because the Levites were set apart for the service of the tabernacle, they received no single tribal homeland. Their presence throughout the land placed priests and Levites near the people they served. Num 35:2 Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance… together with their pasturelands, The surrounding pasturelands supplied space for the Levites’ livestock and household needs. These provisions supported the families responsible for worship, instruction, and the care of the sanctuary. Num 35:2-5 Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance… as the LORD had commanded through Moses. The distribution followed God’s earlier instructions and confirmed Israel’s obedience in settling the land. The Levites’ inheritance came directly from the Lord’s provision through the other tribes. Num 35:1-8 Again the LORD spoke to Moses on the plains of Moab… From the tribes of Judah and Simeon, Judah and Simeon provided cities for the Levites, fulfilling the Lord’s provision for the tribe that received no tribal territory of its own. Judah’s large inheritance and Simeon’s enclaves within it supplied a central region where Levites could serve the surrounding population. Their presence among the tribes supported Israel’s worship, instruction in the Law, and administration of justice. Jos 19:1-9 The second lot came out for the clans of the tribe… they designated these cities by name The cities were formally identified so that the Levites would have secure places to live with their families and pasturelands for their livestock. This careful distribution followed the command given through Moses and ensured that the priestly and Levitical families were established throughout the land. 1Ch 6:57-60 So the descendants of Aaron were given Hebron… to the descendants of Aaron Aaron’s descendants formed Israel’s priestly family within the tribe of Levi. God appointed Aaron as the first high priest, and his sons were set apart to offer sacrifices, oversee worship, and guard the holiness of the tabernacle and later the temple. Their service pointed forward to Christ, the perfect and eternal High Priest. Num 18:1-7 So the LORD said to Aaron, “You and your sons… from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, The Kohathites carried and cared for the holiest furnishings of the tabernacle, including the ark, altars, lampstand, table, and sacred utensils. Their duties required careful obedience because they served near the visible symbols of God’s presence. Aaron’s priestly household belonged to this Kohathite division. Num 3:27-32 From Kohath came the clans of the Amramites… because the first lot fell to them: The cities assigned to the Levites were distributed by lot under Joshua’s direction, according to God’s command. The first allotment went to Aaron’s descendants, giving the priestly families their cities among the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin. 1Ch 6:54-55 Now these were the territories assigned to the Aaronites… They gave them Kiriath-arba Associated with Arba and the Anakim, Kiriath-arba, meaning “City of Arba,” was assigned to the descendants of Aaron among the Levites. Since the Levites received no tribal territory, they were given cities throughout Israel. Jdg 1:10 Judah also marched against the Canaanites… (that is, Hebron), Hebron was an ancient Canaanite city closely connected with Abraham and the patriarchs. It later became David’s first royal capital before Jerusalem was established as Israel’s capital. Gen 23:2 She died in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron)… with its surrounding pasturelands, The pasturelands provided grazing land and support for the priests’ households, allowing them to maintain their families and livestock while serving in Israel’s worship. 1Ch 6:55 They were given Hebron in the land of Judah… in the hill country of Judah. Located in Judah’s rugged central highlands, Hebron held an important and defensible position within the land of Judah while remaining a Levitical city. Jos 14:13 Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh… (Arba was the father of Anak.) The name preserved the city’s connection to the Anakim, a powerful people known for their great stature. Israel’s possession of Hebron marked the removal of its former inhabitants and the settlement of the land God had given to His people. Jos 15:13 According to the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave… But they had given the fields and villages around the city Hebron itself was assigned to the Levites as a city of refuge, while its agricultural lands and outlying villages remained part of Caleb’s inheritance. This preserved the Levites’ place within Israel without transferring Caleb’s allotted territory. 1Ch 6:55-56 They were given Hebron in the land of Judah… to Caleb son of Jephunneh Caleb received Hebron because he had faithfully trusted the Lord when Israel first surveyed Canaan. Though a Kenizzite by ancestry, he was fully counted among Israel and received the inheritance promised to him. Num 32:12 not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite…… as his possession. The land became a lasting inheritance for Caleb and his descendants, demonstrating the fulfillment of God’s promise to reward his faithful service. Jos 14:13-14 Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh… So to the descendants of Aaron the priest Aaron’s descendants served as Israel’s priests, carrying out sacrifices and other duties connected with worship. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no tribal territory, but God provided for them through assigned cities and pasturelands among Israel. 1Ch 6:54 Now these were the territories assigned to the Aaronites… they gave these cities, together with their pasturelands: These cities gave the priests homes throughout the land, while the surrounding pasturelands supported their households and livestock. Their distribution also placed priestly instruction and ministry within reach of the tribes. 1Ch 6:55 They were given Hebron in the land of Judah… Hebron, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, was assigned to the priests and designated as a city of refuge for those responsible for accidental death. Its location among Judah’s settlements made it suitable for priestly families serving throughout Israel. David later sent spoil from his victory over the Amalekites to the elders of Jattir, indicating that it remained an established community in his day. Jos 15:48 These were in the hill country: Shamir, Jattir, Socoh, Eshtemoa, Eshtemoa lay in the hill country of Judah and was assigned to the Aaronic priests. Like Jattir, it was home to Levites who instructed the people in God’s Law and served in matters of worship. David later sent Eshtemoa a share of the Amalekite spoil, recognizing it among the towns of Judah. 1Ch 6:57 So the descendants of Aaron were given Hebron… Holon, Holon is one of the cities given to the Levites in the territory of Judah. It is mentioned in the context of the distribution of the land among the tribes of Israel. Holon, therefore, represents the provision for the Levites' needs, ensuring they had places to live and serve. The city is also listed in 1 Chronicles 6:58, affirming its role in the Levitical cities. Archaeologically, Holon is identified with the site of modern-day Khirbet ʿAlin, though evidence is limited. The city's allocation to the Levites underscores the integration of religious and cultural centers within the tribal territories. Debir's mention in Joshua 15:49 and Judges 1:11-15 further emphasizes its role in Israel's history. The city's connection to learning and wisdom can be seen as a type of Christ, who is the ultimate source of wisdom and knowledge.
