or observe our customs.

The concern included Jewish practices such as Sabbath observance, feasts, dietary distinctions, and other customs. The Jerusalem leaders sought to address the rumors because they threatened unity among Jewish believers who remained devoted to these practices while recognizing Jesus as the Messiah.

What then should we do?

James and the elders recognized that Paul’s arrival required a careful response. Many Jewish believers in Jerusalem remained devoted to the customs of their people and had heard troubling reports about Paul’s ministry among the Gentiles.

Act 2:37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart…
Luk 3:10 The crowds asked him, “What then should we do?”

They will certainly hear that you have come.

Paul’s presence in Jerusalem would soon become known, and the leaders expected objections from believers who believed he was encouraging Jews to abandon Moses. Their concern was to prevent unrest and to address the rumors openly.

Act 28:15 The brothers there had heard about us and traveled as far as…

Therefore do what we advise you.

The elders proposed a practical course to address reports that Paul opposed Jewish believers who continued to observe the customs of their fathers. Their counsel sought to preserve peace in the Jerusalem church and to show that Paul did not reject the law or the temple.

There are four men with us

These Jewish Christians were connected with the church in Jerusalem and were preparing to complete a public religious obligation. Their involvement provided Paul an opportunity to demonstrate respect for Jewish customs without compromising the gospel of salvation by grace.

who have taken a vow.

The men had likely taken a Nazirite vow involving a period of consecration, purification, and offerings at the temple. By joining them in the required expenses and purification, Paul would publicly show that he was not hostile to the Jewish way of life, even as he affirmed that Gentile believers were not required to become Jews.

The four men had completed vows that required temple offerings and the shaving of their heads. James and the elders asked Paul to join them in the public observance.

purify yourself along with them,

Having recently come from Gentile regions, Paul would undergo the required ceremonial purification before entering the temple courts and participating in the offerings.

and pay their expenses

Paul would provide the costs of the sacrifices connected with their vows. This visible act showed his respect for the law and his fellowship with Jewish believers.

Then everyone will know that there is no truth to these rumors about you,

Reports had claimed that Paul taught Jewish Christians to abandon Moses and reject Jewish customs. His participation would publicly answer those accusations.

They were to live in the sexual purity required of God’s people. This decree protected the holiness of Gentile believers and helped preserve fellowship between Jewish and Gentile Christians.

So the next day Paul took the men and purified himself along with them.

Paul joined the four men in the required purification rites connected with their vows. Though called chiefly to the Gentiles, he did not reject Jewish customs that were not contrary to faith in Christ. By doing this publicly, he sought to show Jewish believers that he did not teach Jewish Christians to abandon the Law of Moses.

Then he entered the temple to give notice of the date when their purification would be complete

The purification period required advance notice at the temple so the priests could prepare for the offerings at its conclusion. Paul’s presence in the temple demonstrated his willingness to preserve peace within the Jerusalem church and to remove false accusations against him.

At the completion of the vows, the men were to present the sacrifices prescribed by the Law: a burnt offering, a sin offering, and a peace offering. The commander came up and arrested Paul,

The Roman tribune, later identified as Claudius Lysias, intervened when the riot threatened public order. Soldiers stationed near the temple complex could respond quickly to disturbances during crowded festival periods. Although the crowd sought Paul’s death, the commander removed him from their control.

Paul was taken into Roman custody as a prisoner while the commander attempted to determine the cause of the uproar. Then he asked who he was and what he had done.

Lysias did not yet know Paul’s identity or the accusation against him. The conflicting cries of the crowd gave him no clear answer, revealing that the disturbance arose from religious hostility rather than an established Roman charge.
